Project Planning Considerations

Planning Considerations

  • The curved display geometry was based on actual site measurements and coordinated with factory drawings before custom production.
  • The support method was planned with the renovation contractor and storefront structure instead of using the structural column as the primary fixing surface.
  • Approximately three to four weeks of custom production, around two weeks of sea freight, installation access and remote media-player requirements were considered together with the retail fit-out programme.

Project Overview

For the HOKA retail store at Raffles City, Singapore, ETA Visual was engaged as the local delivery and installation partner for two LED displays. One screen was positioned behind the cashier area for brand, product and promotional content. The second was a custom curved LED display designed around the semi-circular column near the store entrance. The project was not simply a screen installation: the curved geometry, shopfront design, support method, factory drawings, logistics and installation programme all had to work together as one retail fit-out.

Why a Curved LED Display?

The entrance column was already part of the store architecture. Instead of leaving it as a conventional structural feature, the design incorporated a curved LED display that followed the column profile.

This allowed the display to become part of the storefront rather than looking like a separate flat screen. It can still perform the same commercial role as a conventional retail LED display: showing brand videos, new product launches and promotional campaigns. For retail environments, flexible and curved LED solutions can be particularly useful when the available architecture includes columns, arches or other non-flat surfaces.

Engineering Challenges & Solutions

Challenge 1

Measuring and Customising the Curve

The Challenge

The display needed to follow the actual semi-circular column profile rather than an assumed radius. A mismatch between site geometry and factory output would compromise the finished fit.

ETA Visual's Solution

ETA Visual measured the profile on site and used the recorded information to develop the required curved form. Measurements and drawings were coordinated repeatedly with the overseas LED factory before custom production.

Challenge 2

Supporting the LED Display Without Using the Column as the Main Fixing Surface

The Challenge

The structural column could not simply be treated as the primary fixing surface for the LED display. The installation therefore had to be developed together with the renovation contractor.

ETA Visual's Solution

The renovation contractor extended the storefront header structure toward the display location. The LED structure was supported from a raised floor platform and restrained at the upper section through the storefront/header structure, without relying on the column as the main fixing surface.

Challenge 3

Coordinating the Screen With the Shopfront

The Challenge

The curved screen had to integrate with timber framing, entrance signage and shopfront construction delivered by different parties.

ETA Visual's Solution

ETA Visual worked with the client and renovation/design team so the LED dimensions and installation requirements were incorporated into the shopfront construction drawings before the interface was built.

Challenge 4

Managing Production, Shipping and the Retail Opening Schedule

The Challenge

Because the curved display was custom-built overseas, the project schedule had to include drawing coordination, production and shipping before the final installation could take place. Retail fit-outs often have a limited construction window, so the LED schedule must align with the renovation programme early enough to avoid becoming a critical-path item.

ETA Visual's Solution

For this project, custom production took approximately three to four weeks and sea freight to Singapore typically required around two weeks, in addition to drawing coordination. When a programme becomes time-critical, accelerated production or air freight can be considered, but reducing lead time can create additional project cost. Early planning gives the client more options and better cost control.

Remote Content Management for a Retail Chain

The LED displays are operated through network-connected media players. Once connected to the internet and the content management system, marketing teams can publish new videos and promotional content remotely.

This removes the need for staff to visit individual stores with a USB drive every time content needs to be changed. For a retail chain, remote content distribution can make campaign updates faster and more consistent across multiple locations. The LED display is therefore not only a visual feature: the media player and content workflow are also part of the overall digital signage solution.

Three-Party Coordination: Client, Renovation Contractor and LED Team

One of the key lessons from this project is that custom LED installations work best when the client, renovation contractor and LED team share the same approved information before production begins.

  • Final screen size and location
  • Actual site measurements and curved geometry
  • Drawing revision and final approval
  • Support and fixing method
  • Shopfront and architectural interface
  • Power and data requirements
  • Media player and network requirements
  • Production and shipping schedule
  • Installation date and site access
  • Contingency plan for time-critical delivery

What Made the Project Work

1

Site-first geometry

The curved form was based on actual site measurement and controlled drawing coordination before production.

2

Coordinated support

The display support method was planned with the renovation team instead of treating the structural column as the default fixing point.

3

Retail programme alignment

Production, shipping and installation were considered alongside the fit-out schedule and site access.

4

Remote content workflow

Network-connected media players support remote publishing of campaign and promotional content.

Final Result

  • The completed installation delivered two LED displays for the HOKA Raffles City retail environment: a cashier-area content screen and a custom curved entrance display.
  • The curved display follows the entrance-column form and integrates with the surrounding storefront design, while the connected media-player workflow allows the retail team to manage promotional content remotely.
